With Chicken Meat

Posted by Troy @ 3:48 PM

So last night was "girl's night", my wife went to play board games and have dinner with Jamie, Aby, and others, so I hung out with Scott since he was also abandoned for the evening. We decided to go to a Chinese restaurant just down the road called "KIM WU". I had their "Chicken Szechwan Style" which was a little spicy but good.... We found it odd that the descriptions of many items on the menu specified that they were made with chicken meat. Specifically, chicken MEAT. While other chicken dishes mysteriously did not include the extra noun MEAT in the description. Perhaps my worry was unfounded and I was looking too deeply into something as simple as a randomly over accurate translation. But it still gave me pause.

Frosty

Posted by guido @ 9:31 AM

I just heard a warning that if you are outside for more than 15 minutes, any exposed skin is at serious risk for frostbite. I think it is 5 degrees. My gloves aren't doing much good. It almost feels like I'm not wearing any. When I take the dogs out, they keep picking up as many of their feet as possible.

I juice everything now

Posted by guido @ 1:06 AM

Julie picked up this juice at Meijers the other night called Green Goodness. Get a load of what's in it: Apple, pineapple, mango, banana, kiwi, star fruit, tamarind, lime, spirulina, open-cell chlorella, broccoli, ceremonial green tea, spinich, barley grass, wheat grass, blue-green algae, echinacea extract, oderless garlic and Jerusalem artichoke. All that and it tastes good ... that's the REAL surprise.

Meet and greet

Posted by guido @ 8:47 PM

Spent the weekend in Lincoln. I got to meet up and chat with Cole Warnisher on Sunday and Ryan on Saturday. Ryan and I went to the newer coffee bar place, Coffee with Einstein, which was a little chilly but otherwise pretty nifty. I'd like to go back sometime. I got to meet Ryan's fiance, see their new house and hear a good squirrel story (wink, wink). He lives right across the street from the Wilmerts, by the way.

Julie and I also rented some weird movies, like 1999's "Simply Irresistible" which could be one of those so-bad-it's-good movies. I mean, it has a magic crab! OK, it could be a throwback to an earlier style of movie, and in that sense it might be considered clever and romantic. But among today's movies, it just seems very, very strange. There are several things that don't get explained well, and others that don't get explained at all, which bugged me.

We also saw 1998's "Phantoms" which is a Dean R. Koontz's story and had one pretty good idea/twist in it, but that wasn't really enough to make it good. I'll give it a rating of "worth the 50-cent rental."

Boston is cold

Posted by Troy @ 5:46 PM

I'm in Boston now. I bought a new hat & scarf before heading out. Even after adding these new accessories to my heaviest coat and gloves, I'm still freezing! It is supposedly warmer here than it was last week (sub zero and in the national news for breaking records?). And on top of the coldness, I always get lost in Boston. Last night, I spent hours stumbling over an endless supply of one-way streets going the wrong direction. I can't wait to be done with this project.

Filtered for consumption

Posted by Troy @ 8:38 AM

Jantina and I hosted Home Team Friday night. We served Mexican Shells / tacos & chips, though overwhelmingly the beverage of choice was water. In case you were unaware, the water in the Orlando area has a pretty strong taste to it, kind of sulfuric. Well, we typically buy one of those 2.5 gallon dispensers of water. We usually fill a pitcher from the dispenser and keep it chilled in the fridge. Well, we went through the pitcher pretty fast and I refilled it a couple times but distributed its contents to my friends well before it became cold. Of all the amenities to run short on... water? I was perplexed and thought next time we would need to have 5 gallons on hand. This was until, on Sunday night, Jim and Jenn told us the wonders of the pur water system. They explained that it was easy to install and the filter needs replaced every-other month or so. That sounded like a much better strategy to me. We acquired the pur filter and installed it in minutes! It is drinkable and I no longer have anxiety providing water to my guests.

Halo 3 vs me

Posted by Troy @ 8:31 AM

Last night Jim and Jenn came over! We ate, visited, my wife interrogated them with a personality test, but eventually we migrated to the couch and played some Halo. We tried to set the teams up fairly, so it was 3 vs me. The first few rounds, the four of us shared the living room TV. After a while, I noticed my opponents sneaking peaks at my portion of the screen and determining my location. At risk of alienating our guests, I retreated to the XBOX in my office / "game room" to have a screen away from the prying eyes of my opposition. They did continue to claim victory though we ended the evening on a very significant win for me with a 5 -0 win. he he he. We had a blast, it was nice to actually be home after work to do an evening activity like that. I took that luxury for granted before this high travel job I have now.

Infection saving from travel

Posted by Troy @ 8:25 AM

I went to California (San Francisco area) last week for training on a new product. While there though, I developed a sinus infection. The trip home was pretty painful. Friday I went to the doctor and obtained Guaifen, Amoxicillin with Clavulanate and they advised me to avoid air travel this week. So I am working from home this week, YAY! ... Sounds like my next gig will be in Boston. Its probably cold and snowy there :(

Quick drying

Posted by guido @ 6:18 PM

It has been really cold and dry lately (though it is much better today) and our house is pretty old and not insulated well. So showers are akin to torture. I have developed a system to dry off as quickly as possible that has helped me keep from getting too cold.

First, I have this little synthetic chamois towel (like this or this) that I've seen swimmers use. You just wring it out and keep using it. Kinda neat. While the shower is still on, I dry my hair with the sport towel then turn the shower off and dry off the rest of the way with it, trapping the warm air in the shower. Then I get out and finish drying with a regular towel. Much less of a shock to the system.

Grumpy old man

Posted by guido @ 4:08 PM

We picked up Zipper from my parents' house last night and brought him back to our house for a three-week stay. I think it's gonna be a long three weeks. Today went OK, but for some reason I went on a cleaning kick and ended up only getting 2 1/2 hours of sleep last night. ... Midnight update: The lack of sleep took its toll on me in the end today, but Zippy did pretty good overall. He slept most of the day, which I am generally in favor of. He is pretty much blind, so since he's not in his home, he kind of wanders around getting himself lost when he is awake. Heck, he gets lost sometimes when he is at home. I still can't imagine three weeks of days like this.

It got so cold the last couple days and it dried out so much that I succumbed to the urge for lotion. I thought my sides were going to split open, and I don't mean from laughter. And I actually dug out the humidifier a few minutes ago.

I posted tomorrow's Fling page in my newspage designer portfolio. I did the illustration with my new Wacom tablet on Tuesday. I accidentally drew it really small, so I had to do it a second time so we could run it nice an big.

Consulting the ceiling fan

Posted by guido @ 4:44 PM

We've noticed that Utini has a weird habbit of stealing glances at the ceiling fan of whatever room he is in. They don't have to be turned on, even. Julie says he is "consulting the ceiling fan." About what we don't know.

Magazine man

Posted by guido @ 3:53 PM

My buddy (and roommate and studiomate from my college days) Josh has been published in a St. Louis magazine, Playback St. Louis. Here is his column. It seems like it will get archived eventually, but for now that link should work.

Home now, relaxing after the holidays

Posted by Troy @ 3:14 PM

We went to Lincoln for the Holidays and had a very full week. We just returned to Orlando last night in time to go to a Birthday/New Year's Eve party at Jim & Jenn's place (from our cool home team). It was Jim's birthday and the group had a surprise party for him while celebrating the new year. I stayed up way too late but had a great time seeing everyone we missed while away in Lincoln.

While we were in Lincoln though, I was able to catch up with Brett and Sally on Sunday. Everyone is doing well. Brett and Sally are settling into married life and both continue working at the Marc center. Hunter is growing and my nephews had a blast playing with him during out visit.

Earlier in the week, I had a successful gaming day at David's with Darin and Travis. Travis and I arrived at David's place at 6:30 in the morning and started playing the computer version of Halo, followed by Unreal Tournament 2003, and then several rounds of Total Annihilation. It was a good day for the Lowes... Travis and I won overall (even in TA surprisingly). We ate a lot of junk food and drank way too much coffee. I was jittery for the rest of the day and felt somewhat queasy until the next morning. The combination of "food" (choco-dominos and pizza), caffeine (2 cups each of 3 types of coffee), and 1st person shooters definitely did a number on my well-being :)

My parents bought a 17" iMac for Christmas! I helped them get acclimated to the new OS and I think it was everyone's favorite gift this year. I received several new xbox games, a learning remote, some nostalgic "Ghostbusters" swag, gift certificates, a journal, dvds, mac software... lots of great stuff :)

It seemed like a really short trip, I didn't get to catch up with a lot of people I had intended to unfortunately. I hope to have more time next time I visit... maybe in the summer when things are a bit slower.

LCHS song

"Lincoln, Lincoln, we are proud of you. Lincoln, Lincoln, we will e'er be true. Following the bright Golden Rule, we get things done without much ado. We're happy, we're snappy when we send our call. Lend your voices one and all. If dear old Abe were here I know just what he'd do; He'd say Lincoln, we're proud of you!"
