Local CD factory to close

Posted by guido @ 5:32 PM

Another national/international downer for J'ville. LINK HERE -- Wait. -- The governor just announced his effort to try to save the plant. -- Uh, good luck with that. I went to google news and typed in Jacksonville, Illinois, and got a ton of results. That doesn't happen too often. Of course only two or three were not related to the plant closing.

Philadelphia ... still

Posted by Troy @ 7:40 PM

Philadelphia is pretty cool. The Marriott here is nice, great concierge lounge, plus there is a Maggiano's (one of my favorite Italian restaurants) right on the same block as my hotel!

The worksite is only 2 blocks away so I just walk that in the mornings (I didnt even rent a car this week, taxi was only 20 bucks from the airport, thats cheaper than 1 night of parking downtown!)

What else, oh Redding Market is also less than a block away, it is a famous market that has great fresh food (everything from raw meat to Philly Cheese-steak and even several bakeries)

I'm making the most of it, but am anxious to go home still.

Apply yourself

Posted by guido @ 8:55 AM

Job opening someone was trying to get me to apply for:
It's a lead position, meaning that this person would get to design a variety of great pages -- mainly covers -- and we have 11 different covers each week that we design. Even though this position is primarily a features design spot, the person would occasionally be designing covers of other things, like special sections.

We have four national award-winning illustrators in the department, giving (in my opinion) us the strongest illustration staff in the country.

And in general, our designers are given a lot of creative freedom. I'm not one to put too many rules in place.

Subtle shift

Posted by guido @ 10:13 PM

I rearranged some of the links here on the site and added a rotating script to change the couch logo. The photo couch should appear a third of the time and the original couch drawing the other two-thirds. Same script as the background-rotating script. I added the MORE LINKS page over on the right.

It rained most of Sunday afternoon, but it was 60 degrees or so, so I went to Ultimate anyway. After some calling around, we got six people to show up. Not enough for a game, really, but we threw around the flatball for a little more than an hour. It stopped raining for a while and I was almost completely dried out, but then it started again. After than I had to walk around Toys R Us, Target, Bob Evans and the grocery store with soaking wet socks and shoes. Somehow, I forgot about it most of the time. The sunset (right) on the drive home was nice.

I noticed something about THIS SIGN as I was driving home Saturday. It still says "INCREASE" on it, but the word has been moved down one line. What are they thinking?

I went to have lunch with Josh today, but by the time I got there -- late -- he'd already gone to get a sandwich, so I hung out while he ate. I was about to leave when I found out he was showing a video about Christo's "RUNNING FENCE" (1976), so I stayed to watch that.

Bindi has been having some kind of problem with her foot. She'll limp around, trying not to put her weight on it -- then a while later she'll be fine -- then a couple days later she's doing it again -- then not -- then again -- then not. I asked at the vet and they said small dogs have problems with their knee caps popping out of place and then popping back, so we're supposed to keep an eye on it. Hmmm.

Speaking of ailments, my neck problem has resurfaced. I had this thing for several months last year where I lost full movement of my neck. I started feeling it Saturday at work. Now I can only turn my head about 60 degrees to the right and I can't really tilt it to the right either ... gah!

Also today, my sister asked me for a list of the top 10 American Artists. I don't think I'm up to figuring that out quickly, so I just made a list of notable ones. Here's the list I sent her, though I think I was supposed to keep it to 10: Frank Lloyd Wright, Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, Georgia O'Keefe, Norman Rockwell, Mark Rothko, Edward Hopper, Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent, William Merritt Chase, James Abbott McNeill Whistler, Mary Cassatt, Thomas Eakins, Frederic Remington, Roy Lichtenstein, Man Ray, Ansel Adams, Chuck Close. Any others I should add? Any sculptors? Furniture makers?

Put a lid on it

Posted by guido @ 9:17 AM

The concept of "aerosolized fecal matter" won't leave me alone. I saw one of those newsmagazine shows last week with a story on germs and household cleanliness. Part of that story included this concept -- which I'd heard before, mind you -- and a nice visual which I liken to those demonstrations of how feminine products work by using the strange blue liquid. The basic idea is that when you flush the toilet, some percentage of fecal matter becomes airborne and can get thrown up to 20 feet from the toilet depending on the toilet and other conditions. The expert's suggestion: put the lid down when you flush. Anyway, like I said, I have heard of this before, but doesn't "aerosolized fecal matter" have a nice ring to it? OK, not really ... but it's still stuck in my head. ... Yes, I said arisolized fecal matter is stuck in my head. Har har. You people make me sick. Grow up already.

And you thought the real Lincoln had big shoes

Posted by guido @ 10:42 PM

Kelly sent me this update story on the gigantic Lincoln statue idea. LINK HERE for the AP story at CNN. If you've never heard of this before, this is the deal:
A 305-foot monument of Lincoln -- as tall as the Statue of Liberty -- has been proposed in this namesake city of about 15,000 people. Supporters think the $40 million statue could ultimately anchor a massive theme park blending historical exhibits with rides, restaurants and other attractions.

Movie fraction

Posted by guido @ 11:09 AM

We went over to my friend/co-worker's apartment last night. He had surgery Monday morning and wasn't feeling too hot and wasn't able to move too much. So, Julie made fajitas and we took them over there. We started watching "The Pianist" on an XBox, but the DVD crapped out on us about one-third of the way in. For fun, he's going to put up a site documenting his surgery once he feels mobile enough. I'll probably put a link to it. He showed us some of the photos and video he has so far.

This bike is great. LINK HERE Too bad they will be everywhere via Wal-Mart and Toys R Us starting in April 2004. Probably not big enough for me, either. While I'm being picky, I'd have made the front fork longer and the front wheel a little bit smaller.

No spots

Posted by guido @ 10:07 PM

I added "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" to the MOVIE LIST. We saw the matinee today. Very good. That Charlie Kaufman is something else. I need to see "Human Nature," his only movie I haven't seen yet.

I just read that Christopher Ecclestone will be the new Dr Who. LINK HERE My dad and I used to watch Dr. Who together during the Tom Baker, Peter Davison and Colin Baker years. I haven't seen it for quite a few years. The show used to be on PBS, but I'm guessing it is on BBC America these days.

I don't know why, but I find live action versions of anime movies -- like CUTIE HONEY -- much more odd than live action versions of American animated shows.

For crying out loud

Posted by guido @ 11:32 PM

Saw "In America" last night at the UIS film series -- I'll be adding it to MY LIST. It was very good. I could hear a lot of people crying at the end. I, on the other hand, was crying silently -- just a wee bit.

I got to go on a super-secret Ferris wheel ride yesterday. I shan't say much about it, except that it is about 55 feet tall and inside this little room, basically just big enough for it to fit inside. So, when you ride it, you get pretty close to the walls, which made it feel like it was going faster than it really was. I'll post a picture when I get a chance. I have a little video, too. Maybe I'll put that on here when I get a chance, as well. FERRIS WHEEL VIDEO AVI I think you have to download it to watch it.

I helped my mom get Zipper's profile up on DOGSTER the other night when we went to pick up the dogs.

I dumped Blogrolling from our page. It was causing a pretty major lag when the site loads. I kept most of the blogs in there, but they are hard coded in the HTML now. Update: Yep, that makes the site load faster and more consistently.

Tried the Yeo's Sugar Cane Drink tonight. Not so good. Fresh is probably much better.

Second episode of "Wonder Falls" surprised me a little in that it didn't follow the pattern set up in the first episode as strictly as I imagined it might. Good work, writers. Now keep it up.

Starsky & Hutch

Posted by Troy @ 2:30 PM

I saw "Starsky & Hutch" last night. I can't say that I recommend it. I think that if I were a fan of the original TV show, maybe there would have been more "inside jokes". Maybe something along the lines of, "OH, I remember the mime episode! That was so funny, I'm glad they put that in there!". But, for me, I had none of that.

Hummus a happy tune

Posted by guido @ 11:51 PM

I fell in a vat of hummus. I yelled "fire" when I fell into the hummus. Nobody would help me if I yelled "HUMMUS!!!"

Sorry. That is a take-off on an old SMOTHERS BROTHERS bit. Tonight, though, I fought with the blender for a little while. In the end I did have a big vat of hummus. Rock. Now I need a pita, which I have made before, but this time I'm just going to buy some.

Increase what?

Posted by guido @ 4:46 PM

I've been passing this sign on my way to work for the last week or two. I don't really have a good sense of what it's supposed to mean. The best I can come up with is "Increase and multiply," but that seems like a long shot. That's all it's ever said, too. It isn't like it used to have more words that blew down. I was out and about with the camera taking a photo for work yesterday, and I was right by the sign. I'm interested in hearing some interpretations.

Our new digital camera came today. I just have to go pick it up at the UPS stronghold. I have to get some rechargeable batteries -- Ni-MH, I believe -- and a charger. Update -- Thursday night: Rechargable batteries are freaky expensive!

Racquetball

Posted by Troy @ 11:15 AM

Played some racquetball yesterday with Jim for about an hour. Last time I played was in September (that is when I learned for the first time, played several times while on a project in the D.C. area). Yesterday felt as if I were starting all over again; I guess not having played for so long... racquetball is not like riding a bike. On a positive note, my shoulder is really the only sore muscle this morning. I need to get in better shape.

Mr. Alberts' obit

Posted by guido @ 10:12 AM

I just found this obituary for the high school tennis coach Troy and I had:

iTrip

Posted by Troy @ 11:13 AM

Last night I went to CompUSA with my parents (they are down visiting this week). I've been thinking about buying an iTrip for my iPOD for a while now, and they had it for $29.99 ($5 less than online or at the Apple store) so I picked it up! I tried it on my home stereo just to see how it operates, but the real test will be on my next road trip out of state! No more searching for a radio station in foreign lands, I'll have my own broadcast filling my rental car :)

Phair to middling

Posted by guido @ 9:31 AM

Going to see LIZ PHAIR tonight. Mom and Dad are watching the dogs for a couple days. Hopefully they won't be much trouble. We're heading to the show RIGHT after work tonight. This is our first show at The Pageant, though it's been around for about six years. Not sure what that's about. The opening band WHEAT, I've not heard anything from that I know of. Allmusic.com says they are melancholy, which I tend to like, and likens them to Pavement and the Pernice Brothers, both of which I like somewhat -- so my fingers are crossed. UPDATE: RACHAEL YAMAGATA opened for Liz, too.

I picked up some foreign beverages Sunday at the Asian food store. Sugar cane drink and some kind of grass jelly drink. I haven't tried them yet. I also got some canned longans and rambutans. I haven't tried those yet either. I did finally make up a pitcher of that tamarind Kool-aid type stuff. It was good. Better than the horchata (rice flour) flavor -- way too sweet.

Jolly good show

Posted by guido @ 11:07 AM

"Touching Evil" on USA was good. Good mood and fairly intelligent. Fun character in an otherwise serious show. "Wonderfalls" on Fox was good, too, but I'm not sure if they will be able to switch up the formula they set up in the premier episode.

Tubin'

Posted by guido @ 11:21 PM

Rented "Matchstick Men" tonight, as there was nada on TV but reruns. I liked it a lot. A lot. Julie taped the Steven King maxi-series "Kingdom Hospital" and I'll probably give it another shot, but I didn't care for the first episode, so I doubt I'm in for the long haul. Something about Steven King TV shows that don't do it for me. The movies are different for some reason. It can't just be production values, can it?

I got to work on a fun page at work today ... actually it was driving me crazy, but it turned out pretty good, I think. I'll try to post it, and a pretty decent food page from yesterday, in my Newspagedesigner portfolio. Link's over to the left.

This project, Radio Vox Populi (LINK HERE) is sooooo messed up, you'll have to listen to it. Is that like asking someone to try milk that's gone bad? Anyway, it's a bunch of blogs that are found and read by a computer and broadcast.

Monkey pants

Posted by guido @ 12:33 AM

I'd never seen this brand before, but I guess it isn't uncommon. Somebody at work said "You've never heard of them?!" So, even if they aren't unique, these pants were a good find at the thrift store last week. Nice, tough, brown workpants with the bonus of monkies on the buttons. Where does one buy these around here, I wonder.

I started looking at them because of the monkies, but it turns out they are exactly my size. How often does that happen? It was half-price day, to boot. Three cheers for monkey pants.

I believe I shall wear monkey pants (I must always refer to them as monkey pants ... or should it be monkeypants?) on the morrow. I wore brown pants today, though. I hope folks don't think I didn't change my pants. Or perhaps I should encourage their musings and wear all the brown pants I own in a contiguous fashion.

I did buy a second pair of brown pants at the thrift store the other day. Brushed cotton ... ummm, nice. I could wear those Thursday. They're a little big, but with a belt they'll be fine.

Go easy

Posted by guido @ 2:49 PM

Last week at Ultimate, Jeremy told me "You're one of the most easygoing people I know." Several people have told me that, but I'm not sure if I'm actually easygoing or if I seem easygoing for some reason. Julie doesn't think I'm easygoing. Maybe it's just a difference in definitions.

Too gusty

Posted by guido @ 11:40 PM

Ultimate practice didn't happen today. Something close to 40 mph wind gusts and around 20 mph wind when it wasn't gusting.

Saw "The Last Samurai" instead. I enjoyed it. Rather sad. I was surprised to see ninja, I have to say. That was a satisfying fight scene. The movie is a work of historical fiction, so Julie and I were wondering what parts were based on reality and which were totally ficticious.

Listening to today:
>> Ron Sexsmith, "Cobblestone Runway"
>> David Bowie, "Hunky Dory"

Lincolnite sighting

Posted by guido @ 1:30 PM

Someone came up to me at Goodwill today and asked me what my name was. I said "Guido." He said something like "It's not Josh." I said "It used to be." He stuck out his hand and said "Hey, do you remember me? ... Rich Dinger." Ahh, yes, I do remember. From Lincoln. I don't think I would have recognized him, but I remember. He lives in a small, nearby town and builds houses. His wife is from LCHS, too. I need to look them both up in a yearbook. He said he was in our class. I remember Chrissy Dinger being in our class. Not sure about Rich. Anyway, as close as I am to Lincoln, I don't run into people from Lincoln every day.

More trouble than its worth

Posted by Troy @ 12:48 PM

So the cable company called Wednesday offering a great deal. Digital cable package for a great introductory rate for the first few months and no additional contract to sign etc. I figured I would use it for the intro price and then cancel. Well, they came to install it today, but the technician forgot a step. So now, some of the normal channels do not come in, and he has to come back :(

One of the new channels that I think has a lot of promise is G4, a 24 hour video game channel!

Plucked from The Peacock

NBC is dropping WICS as an affiliate, the radio news just reported. That's the only NBC we have now. I wonder if we're going to get NBC from St. Louis, Peoria, Quincy or Champaign?
Champaign: WICD-TV: http://www.wicd15.com
Peoria: WEEK-TV: http://www.week.com
Quincy: WGEM-TV: http://www.wgem.com

Update:I guess the ABC station, WAND will become an NBC affiliate and WICS will likely become an ABC affiliate. -- Strange.

"Passion"

Posted by Troy @ 7:29 AM

I saw "The Passion of the Christ" last night. It was not as gory as the media made it out to be. It was very good, but the book was better. I'm not sure that someone unfamiliar with the story and characters would get as much out of it, honestly. So read at least one of either Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John before seeing it ... or if not, read it afterward to answer questions.

"I got a fresh start!"

Posted by guido @ 9:39 PM

There's a commercial with my college roommate's family in it. His dad is the pastor at a church in Decatur and the commercial comes on every once in a while. Josh's little brother is one of several people who pop up and say "I got a fresh start!" very enthusiastically. Fun times. LINK HERE

We picked up "The Tick: The complete series" on DVD. I used a gift certificate that I got for Xmas from my boss, Copper. So The Tick is officially my Xmas present. We also picked up "Spongebob Squarepants: The Complete 1st Season" DVD too. Bring it around town! Yeah!

Bus chase, AC/DC style

Posted by guido @ 8:25 PM

I know I probably have dreams all the time, but I rarely remember them. So, when I remembered one a couple days ago, I was a little excited. Here's what happened, as best I can now recall:

I pull up to the corner of Fourth Street and (I think) S. Union, right across from the catholic church. On the corner is Brian Johnson, of AC/DC, singing and strutting in place. Now I'm on foot, and I swing a left and then take the first right, down Third Street. As I start down third, I notice a new building at Carroll Catholic School. I'm wearing a bathrobe and running down Third Street and being chased by a school bus. I cut over to First Street and continue running. I'm heading towards my house when a pickup truck comes from the direction I'm facing and slows the already slow bus. It tries to go around the block. The tension builds ... I wake up. Shoot.

Happenings stream

Posted by Troy @ 2:38 PM

Well, I am going with some friends from church to see Passion tonight. I'll be sure to update the movie list upon successful completion.

I wonder if Matt or Ryan will be provoked into posting with their names having the strikethrough on the sub-title :)
I think each of them have 1 post ... and Brett has yet to post!

I obtained Ninja Gaiden for XBOX this week. I preordered it too early, though. By the time I went to pick it up, they were all out of the little poster incentive thingys (I pre-ordered mine before they had the incentive).

I cleaned out my office closet today. I got rid of a bunch of old employee handbooks and such. The top shelf in my closet looks much better and is no longer a falling hazard.

I am traveling to Tarrytown, NY, on Monday (for work). Never been there before. I'm glad I bought the Magellan 700.

Doom-da-da-DOOM

Posted by guido @ 12:52 AM

I just got back from my friends' house. They thought they might have gotten infected by a computer virus. I thought it sounded like they had from the symptoms, namely MS Word documents changing to zip files with strange names. I went over there at 10:15 p.m. and found out that there were actually some other symptoms, too, namely JPEGs were also changing file formats.

The part that doesn't make sense is that they only use Web mail accounts and don't open attachments unless they are expecting something. Oh, and they tried using system restore (which I don't totally understand, not having XP myself) and that didn't rid them of the problems.

So I try to run their McAfee VirusScan and it won't run. (That might be another symptom if it used to run correctly.) So do an online virus scan and find the MyDoom.f virus is on the machine. I download a program that searches for and deletes all the infected files. Turns out there are 19,000 infected files. It took about 2 hours to look it over, try a couple things, find the tools online and run everything ... and restart a couple times.

They figure it might have been one of their friends who had visited in the last couple weeks and used the computer.

Turn of events

Posted by guido @ 10:33 AM

It looks like I sprained my ankle Sunday at Ultimate. I thought I might have. It didn't feel bad Sunday night, but it was tight yesterday and it's really tight today.

Somebody asked me if I could/would design a site for their group today during this morning's tornado drill. She said they just want something simple, so I think I'll probably do it. I just have to figure out what to charge. Any ideas? Update: They may want more than I can deliver. Shoot. I wanted to do it.

I'm in Philadelphia.

I'm in Philadelphia. I flew here last night thinking I would have an AM meeting only to discover the customer is not available until 2:30. Very strange. I fly back home tonight, though I wonder if I'll actually accomplish anything today. This hotel has a nice concierge lounge though, and they had awesome chocolate chip cookies last night :)

Hella good

Posted by guido @ 6:54 PM

Yesterday's Ultimate game had a great turnout. We had 14 people (7-on-7) playing for a while, and 12 (6-on-6) most of the time. The wind was bad, but the temperature was in the 60s. That accounts for the good numbers.

Today we went shopping for several hours. I picked up a Hellboy movie action figure at Sam Goody. Mine doesn't have the coat, like the one to the right, but otherwise looks the same.

I also found the Target-exclusive Star Wars: Clone Wars animated figures. I didn't get a couple (Dirge, Anakin, Clonetrooper) but I did get Asajj Ventress, Count Dooku, Mace Windu, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda. I think you can see them here if you wanna. Last week I got a few other SW figures, namely the Unleashed Yoda, Han and Boba Fett.

We also picked up a bunch of groceries. Fun, fun. Actually, I think that was the main reason we went shopping today. Just not the most fun part.

Today is Utini's birthday. He's 2 years old.

I've had 5 soda pops today ... I disgust myself. I'm switching to juice after this glass. We rented a couple movies yesterday. We watched "American Spendor" yesterday and "The Core" today.

LCHS song

"Lincoln, Lincoln, we are proud of you. Lincoln, Lincoln, we will e'er be true. Following the bright Golden Rule, we get things done without much ado. We're happy, we're snappy when we send our call. Lend your voices one and all. If dear old Abe were here I know just what he'd do; He'd say Lincoln, we're proud of you!"
