Night's doings

Posted by guido @ 11:00 PM

LISTENING TO: Turin Brakes "Ether Song," Death Cab For Cutie "Transatlanticism," Starsailor "Slience Is Easy" and some other stuff I can't remember.
COMIC SERVICE: I picked up my comic book subscription after not going for a month and a half. After weeding some things out, the bill came to a mind-numbing $150. Gak! Despite that bill, I highly recommend Comic Service, 1000 E. Stanford Ave., Springfield, Ill. --> 217-753-0109 --> Tell Jim that Guido sent you.
DINNER: D'arcy's Pint: Delux Ponyshoe (that's hamburger, onions, bacon bits) & Black Velvet (the drink, not the cake)
BOWLING: 96 (ick) & 130 (eh, better)
How's Impotent Potentate for a band name? Maybe somethingelse Potentate. Any ideas?

Sill-y pictures

Posted by guido @ 9:16 AM

I guess I got Jess thinking about the stuff on her window sill. She posted pics HERE. So I join the fun with this one from my work window that isn't an outside window, but it's the best I got.

Jess: I'm not sure who the figure on the left is, so that might change things, but just looking at it I had a whole story of a giant rampaging mutant broccoli.
Guido: The soldier to the left knows the giant rampaging broccoli is just scared and doesn't really mean any harm, so he wants to protect the broccoli ... they have a special unspoken bond.
Jess: Well, that's nice.
Jess: Giant broccoli probably don't have many options when it comes to friends.
Guido: Yes, they probably take what they can get.
Guido: Do you think the broccoli has a name?
Jess: Most definitely.
Jess: Maybe Clyde.

You can feel the sap

Posted by guido @ 10:56 PM

Added "Under the Tuscan Sun" to my movie list -- watched it tonight. It was terribly sappy. One of the most sappy I've seen in a while.

OK turnout for Ultimate. We had 6's for a while. Some of the regulars, I'm guessing, were wooed away by some local bands playing.

Piqued interest

Posted by guido @ 8:27 AM

I thought the paper was chock-full of interesting news today. Headlines:
--> Cass (County) jury finds Butlers guilty (local aggravated criminal sexual abuse trial)
--> Iraq: Nation sovereign once more: U.S. turns over power 2 days early
--> Residents can browse used items on Internet (JACKSONVILLE FREECYCLE)
--> Northern Illinois earthquake felt in Jacksonville
--> Supreme Court outlaws interrogation tactic that undermines Miranda warning
--> Supreme Court: U.S. cannot hold terror suspects in legal limbo

And anothter S.C.O.T.U.S. story from the radio:
--> In a 5-4 vote, the U.S. Supreme Court rules that a 1998 federal law enacted to shield minors from porn is likely unconstitutional. The high court says a lower court was right to block the law from taking effect, pending a trial, because it unnecessarily restricts legitimate speech.

Tiger

Posted by Troy @ 4:35 AM

I'm anxious to see fuzzycouch.com in the new Safari RSS in Tiger. The new browser will detect rss and atom feeds allowing search for timely news items to be pretty instantaneous.

The visual scripting for automating repetetive tasks for non-programmers looks really awesome. You can build with "Automater" a script that says "on this webpage, grab all of the images, import them into iphoto as a new album named "My pictures" then export them to iDVD, add these transitions and create a screensaver. All with a simple graphical interface.

The other realy cool app is the new iChat. It will allow 10 people audio chatting over the net, or up to 3 others video conferenceing. And the interface is really slick.

The full keynote is on Apple's World Wide Developer's Conference (WWDC) website. VIDEO HERE

Pho Shizzle

Posted by guido @ 9:31 PM

I love the name of this Vietnamese place. I'm not sure where it is exactly, but I found the pic a while back. The bummer of this is that "Pho" is pronouced "fa," I think.

Julie and I went to "Saved!" after Ultimate today. Good stuff. I'm adding in to THE LIST

There's a new beta of Firefox ... 0.9 I believe. Get it at MOZILLA.ORG

LCHS retirees

Posted by guido @ 10:55 PM

I forgot to mention back when I first saw it -- I think it was a few weeks ago -- but there was a mention in "The Courier" about a few of our high school teachers who retired this year: Mitzie Welsh (biology), Rita Vaught (English) and Steve Sauer (history). Also, I just noticed that Jim Vipond is now the chemistry teacher ... I wish I had him for chemistry.

Movie refusal?

Posted by guido @ 12:42 PM

From the "Grace about town" column in the 6-24-2004 "Illinois Times."

"This year, we went to see The Day after Tomorrow. Amy was adamant about going to see it. I'm not sure why.

"This flick caused quite a furor in town because apparently the Kerasotes theater monopoly refused to show the movie if it played at the drive-in on the night the film opened all over the country.

"First, bravo to the Route 66 for showing it. Second, is a monopoly ever a good thing? And is anybody planning on doing anything to remedy this situation? Doesn't it seem atrocious that Kerasotes wouldn't show a movie just because it plays at the drive-in? Usually the drive-in movies have already opened at the Kerasotes theaters. Isn't this discrimination against patrons of drive-in theaters? Don't we deserve to see a movie outdoors on its release date?

"It's not as if the people who prefer sitting in air conditioning are going to suddenly decide to take all their business to the drive-in. It's not as if there are a dozen drive-ins in town, all owned by the same people.

"All I'm saying is, if I want to enjoy a fresh new movie while sitting outside in the precious warm summer air, please let me, Mr. Kerasotes."

Grace Smith,

I was wondering how you came to the conclusion that Kerasotes "refused to show" the movie "The Day After Tomorrow" while it was playing at the drive-in? My impression has been that competing theater chains within the same area bid for the exclusive rights to show movies. Therefore, if The Route 66 Drive-in won the bidding for "The Day After Tomorrow," then the Kerasotes chain can't show that movie. Did the theaters tell you something different?

Also, "is a monopoly ever a good thing?" you ask? Potentially. If Kerasotes didn't have any other theaters or theater chains to bid against to get the most desirable movies, they could pass on some of the savings in the form of cheaper tickets ... though I have my doubts that it would actually play out that way.

Cordially,
Guido

Bard days' night

Posted by guido @ 12:09 PM

Plan is to go to the opening night performance of "Two Gentlemen of Verona" tonight at THE ILLINOIS SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL in Bloomington. We've been going to one of the shows each year for the past half-dozen years or something close to that. It's going to be a chilly one, which is better than hot in my book.

Update: Pretty funny show. I remember liking this bit:

SPEED
She wooes you by a figure.

VALENTINE
What figure?

SPEED
By a letter, I should say.

VALENTINE
Why, she hath not writ to me?

SPEED
What need she, when she hath made you write to
yourself? Why, do you not perceive the jest?

VALENTINE
No, believe me.

SPEED
No believing you, indeed, sir. But did you perceive
her earnest?

VALENTINE
She gave me none, except an angry word.

SPEED
Why, she hath given you a letter.

VALENTINE
That's the letter I writ to her friend.

SPEED
And that letter hath she delivered, and there an end.

VALENTINE
I would it were no worse.

SPEED
I'll warrant you, 'tis as well:
For often have you writ to her, and she, in modesty,
Or else for want of idle time, could not again reply;
Or fearing else some messenger that might her mind discover,
Herself hath taught her love himself to write unto her lover.
All this I speak in print, for in print I found it.
Why muse you, sir? 'tis dinner-time.

VALENTINE
I have dined.

SPEED
Ay, but hearken, sir; though the chameleon Love can
feed on the air, I am one that am nourished by my
victuals, and would fain have meat. O, be not like
your mistress; be moved, be moved.

Shutin' out the IM

Posted by guido @ 7:15 AM

Beginning at about 6 p.m. Wednesday, Yahoo changed its instant messaging language to prevent third-party services, such as Trillian and Fire, from accessing its service. This time, Yahoo said it will continue changing its protocols to prevent clients from finding new ways to incorporate Yahoo. They say it's an effort to reduce "spim" a.k.a. IM spam. I call it a pain in my tuchus.

Update 6/24: Trillian released a patch within a day and shared their findings with Fire, so they're working on their fix now. These folks are on the ball!

Weekend getaway

Posted by guido @ 8:53 PM

OK! Weekend recap. Sorry this is so long, but I gotta write it down if I want to remember. :)

Julie and I drove up to Lincoln Friday night. Erin, Julie and I all left Lincoln the next morning up I-55, grabbed some fast food along the highway for lunch and continued on I-55. We didn't stop again until we were at 900 N. Michigan Ave., Chicago.

I was driving in downtown Chicago (yikes!) and I probably would have freaked out if I had continued much further. We were looking for the MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART (MCA) and thought we were pretty close so I pulled in one of the first parking garages I saw. Turned out to be the parking garage connected to the 900 N. Michigan Shops building.

We walked the few blocks over to the MCA and spend a big chunk of the day there. Lots of good stuff. A huge Chuck Close portrait ... always nice to see. There was a nice show of Chicago-based artists. There was a neat, huge piece right inside the front door by Brazilian artist José Damasceno called Observation Plan, a scene depicting several figures looking at artwork (to make viewers aware of themselves looking at art) using approximately 30,000 yellow no. 2 pencils stuck into the wall. There was a small collection of Alexander Calder pieces. There was a fairly wacky installation-type piece called CarianaCarianne comprised of letters, legal documents, videos, photographs, and other objects CarianaCarianne demonstrates how legally changing her name is the first step towards public recognition of her two selves co-existing in one body.

Anyway, we then started walking towards the House of Blues, but then I remembered we didn't have our concert tickets. We trekked back to the car and got them, Erin called around and found a play to go to, then we took off walking again. We stopped at a deep-dish pizza place, but the wait was long, so we kept walking and came across another pizza place, Pizzaria Uno (Due). They said the wait should be more like 25 minutes, so we put our name in there. Ended up taking us a couple hours to get in, get the food and eat.

So we were late for the concert -- missed The Rouge Wave but caught all of the second opener, The Glands. We all jumped in a cab and got to the HOB quick. Erin continued on to her play which ended up being way up north a ways. Julie and I went into the concert and it was pretty packed. We missed the line, at least, and were able to walk right in. We couldn't get very close without budging, so we found an OK spot and waited for the Shins to play. And they did.

We cabbed it back up to North Michigan, met Erin at the car and made our way out to our hotel out in the burbs (cheapish).

DAY TWO: Sunday we spent a large chunk of time at the MUSEUM OF SCIENCE AND INDUSTRY, including the special show "Action! An Adventure in Moviemaking." Where we made a goofy faux trailer for a non-existent movie. I have a copy of it ... maybe I'll upload it to somewhere and post it here. It's pretty lame. We also saw the blues exhibit and some other stuff then took off towards Clark Street. We found the comedy club we wanted to go to, the block just south of Wrigley Field, and parked a few blocks away. We noticed Penny's Noodle Bowl right across the street and ate dinner there. We shared some Tom Yum and I had the spicy Pepper Noodle.

I didn't realize it at the time, but RONNIE "WOO WOO" WICKERS was sitting right behind me at the restaurant. This other guy kept saying "woo woo" and this couple's dog, which was otherwise being quite, would bark. This guy got a kick out of it and kept saying "woo woo" every once in a while. Julie thought the couple was getting kinda upset, understandably.

We made our way to the improv club, THE IMPROV OLYMPIC and saw a show made up of three improv groups which each had around a 30 minutes on stage, and a couple bits they did as one huge group. The groups were: CHATTERBOX (good, but a little rough), RATTLESNAKE HIGH SCHOOL (very good) and Valhalla (very, very good).

Back to the hotel. Sleep. DAY THREE: Power was out at the hotel when I woke up -- and stayed that way. Not sure what was going on and I didn't ask. We checked out around 11:30 a.m. Monday and I was feeling a little oogie from sinus headache and maybe something else. We found our way to Ikea and bought a new chair and some cookies. Then we ate at JOE'S CRAB SHACK -- I tried the BBQ 1 1/4-pound Dungeness Crab on Caitlin's recommendation. It was quite good, but it took me a good hour to eat the whole thing. I displayed no efficiency, but lots of endurance in the crab-eating.

Then we headed home. Oh, and on the way home I found a bunch of Star Wars figures I have been looking for. Rock. Expensive weekend, though.

SCOTUS rules

Posted by guido @ 12:06 PM

Siding with authorities in an important test of their power, a divided Supreme Court said yesterday that citizens can be arrested for refusing to give their names to police. Once again, I find myself am at odds with the powers given to the police. I know they need certain powers, but I don't like that they can arrest you for not giving your name.

Postgame Carnage Report

Posted by Troy @ 10:50 PM

We invited my friends from church to play Halo with my family visiting from Illinois tonight. We were able to get together 4 TVs and 4 XBOXs for the event.

I printed cards with all of the different levels and the most popular game modes. When players arrived, I had them mark on a card their favorite game mode and level. Throughout the night we randomly selected from the cards . That was the most fair way I could come up with so that everyone got to play their favorites.

After each match, I took a digital photo of the results so that I could compile the stats.. which I published in the PARTY REPORT!!

606 takes ... and no CGI?

Posted by Troy @ 12:18 PM

Wow... this is a really cool and painstakingly difficult COMMERCIAL to create. The WRITE-UP describes workers going for days without sleep, 605 mishaps, and when they finally delivered to the client, they assumed "trick photography"! They were astounded to hear that it all came together in a single take.

Tourism

Posted by Troy @ 7:11 AM

My family is down from Illinois. Well, a lot of them are down. My project in Philadelphia wrapped up early, so I've bee able to spend evenings with them.

Tuesday we went to eat at P.F. Changs and Cheesecake factory. Travis and I took the kids to P.F Changs while the adults and Taylor went to Cheesecake. We had a great time, even had time to look around the Mall a little, the EB Games and Apple store were still open for us.

Wednesday I helped out at the Edge (our youth group) and took my Sister, Niece, and Nephew to that. It was really groggy out. But we all still had fun.

Thursday we went to Mimi's Cafe (yummy chicken pot pies) and then came back to our place an played some games. (Pac-Man Vs mostly)

Friday Jantina and I had Home Team (small group) so we were with them that evening. We went to Erin's parents house and had a great time, lassagna for dinner and homemade fudge for dessert.

Saturday I delivered fresh Krispie Kreme doughnuts to the family at their place in the morning. After breakfast I took Travis, Grace and the kids to Epcot. The six of us spent the better part of the day there, we all got slightly sun burnt.

Sunday, in addition to the usual coffee and doughnuts we are also having a fruit platter for Father's Day. Jantina and I are heading out in a few minutes to go set that up. My family will all be there for the service this morning, some of them it will be the first time at my church , so I'm pretty excited about that.

Neighborhood excitement

Posted by Matt @ 7:07 AM

So I'm finishing dinner and watching some junk on TV when the dogs get excited at the front door. I just close it to avoid the barking. I then look out to see this on my lawn:

The police were responding to a guy at the halfway house next door with a bow and arrow who had stopped taking his medication. He was pretty crazy. We were in the house for some time while the police used it as a spotter position. They finally wanted us to leave and escorted us out to the end of the block. Everybody was there, about 20 officers and SWAT. They finally tazered the guy and got him out. Nothing like guys with guns swarming the neighbors' home.

Strike & spare

Posted by guido @ 8:03 AM

Went bowling with Erin on Friday and again yesterday. My high score was 135 and all four recent games were well above 100. That's usually my goal, to break 100. Before we went bowling, I mowed the lawn and Julie and I went to Panera Bread for lunch. We met up with Erin for "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban." Then after bowling, we ate at Olive Garden. Stuffed silly -- why do I always do that? Finally watched "The Devil's Backbone" all the way through last night. I'll add the two movies to my 2004 MOVIE LIST. Oh, and we threw the bedroom air conditioner in the window last night.

Had to work Sunday, so I missed Ultimate for the first time in a while. I haven't heard how it went. The Jacksonville game is tonight. I haven't looked what the weather is supposed to be like yet. -- Ah, 30 percent chance of showers. Not too bad.

I heard some weird scanner traffic Sunday night and got a reporter and photog to go check it out, but they didn't find much. But today there is a story. "Large crowd gets out of hand: Parents allegedly using children as shields from pepper spray."

I'm sorta disappointed that the Supreme Court avoided the church/state pledge issue in their ruling yesterday. LINK: WASHINGTON POST

YAHOO! MAIL has been overhauled as of today, I noticed when I logged in this morning. Upgrades: Streamlined interface, 100MB of email storage, Message size up to 10MB. Appreciated. I went from using 60 percent of 6MB of space to 4 percent of 100MB of space.

Pajama Monkey Dancing

Posted by Troy @ 10:45 PM

Last night we had a pajama theme Home Team with breakfast food over at Scott and Jamie's. Jantina made monkey bread and we had waffles, fruit, quiche, bacon, coffee, O.J., etc. Very yummy. We stayed pretty late, and had a really great time with everyone.

This morning we ran over to the Mall at Millennia, then I spent some time with Dennis (half of a new couple in our home team). I fixed his computer while we played some XBOX. Spyware programs seem to be running rampant, taking over friend's computers. THIS, THIS, and THIS (in that order) seem to be doing the trick in fixing things up. Of course, running Mozilla instead of IE or Outlook helps most.

This evening we ate at P.F. Chang's, and then went to see Stepford Wives. The movie wasnt great, I can't recommend it.

Last week I learned some Applescript. I built this DROPLET that calls this PERL SCRIPT. It was to convert what Guido calls "smart quotes" into normal quotes.
Update: New bundled .APP version includes Guido-head icon!

This is my last week in Philadelphia for this project! I'm pretty excited about wrapping it up.

Bruised

Posted by guido @ 4:23 PM

I've been roughed up a bit this week. I got a disc thrown in my face pretty darn hard. Then I used a too-heavy bowling ball Wednesday night, stressing out my forearm, then I rolled my ankle Thursday night.

Erin, back from Vietnam for summer, came to stay with us for a couple days. Wish I didn't have to work so we could all do stuff together more. Julie's school has been out for a little while now, so at least she's free. They went swimming and to El Ranchorito yesterday.

Julie's birthday is tomorrow!

Monday went swimmingly

Posted by guido @ 9:38 PM

Erin brought Julie and I some fun stuff. A year-of-the-monkey shirt from Saigon, two Cadbury Time Out candy bars from London, a monkey sculpture from somewhere (I don't know that I heard) and got to try some other food she brought back, like some tasty ginger candies.

We were all up in Lincoln on Sunday and this morning. Power went off in Lincoln for a while. I think something's following us around.

Julie, I, and the doggies went over to Maria's pool this afternoon. Julie did some swimming, I cataloged my latest comics and read most of one issue of Amazing Spider-Man. Yet another task I'm behind on.

When we got home, we watched the DVD I got a couple weeks ago: "Stacked." It's the 2003 Ultimate Players Association Championships (Oct. 30 - Nov. 2, 2003) -- we have just watched the open division so far.

What else today? "Touching Evil," "Monster House," and coming up soon "The Dead Zone" season premier.

Figure faltering

Posted by guido @ 1:43 AM

I can't believe I found a new Star Wars figure -- CAPTAIN ANTILLES (Tantive IV Invasion) -- at the J'ville Wal-Mart. There was just one, but it's better than nothing. I think I've fallen behind.

I know I still need Ephant Mon from 2002. I never saw it anywhere. He's on eBay, but way too expensive there.

American giant gone

Posted by guido @ 3:00 PM

With the news of President Reagan's death, I'm going to have to hold several pages in the paper and redo a bunch of stuff for tomorrow. We also had a local fatal accident, so I'm interested to see how our coverage plays out.

Update 11:59 p.m.: Well, we're done with pages now. My boss (Copper) came in and helped out a whole bunch. I was letting myself get overwhelmed by all the stories and photos that were coming over the various wire services.

Update 12:38 a.m. Sunday: I just called the Jacksonville Fire Department and they came down and found the source of the terrible burning smell. One of the lights in the newsroom was super-duper hot. I got to see it on their handheld heat sensor dodad.

Homecoming: Waby

Posted by guido @ 3:48 AM

My sis got back from Vietnam last night. We stopped at a Springfield restaurant for a drink after Julie, mom, Stephanie and I met her at the airport. She briefly told us about the drive to Hanoi, the day she spent in Bangkok (layover) and the week in London. She brought Julie and I our favourite candy bar from London -- a Time Out bar! We brought the dogs along and Bindi, usually stingy with kisses, gives Erin a smooch AGAIN. Here is Erin:

Plastic Circuits

Posted by Troy @ 11:27 AM

I came across this article on our plane trip home last weekend. Xerox has a way to print transistors with a plasticy ink through an ink-jet process. That is pretty cool!

In video game news, while I'm anxiously looking forward to Halo 2's release on 11/09... Full Spectrum Warrior came out this week! Speaking of Halo, when I went home last weekend, my little brother proved once again that he has far more time to play video games than I do (20-50 his win).

As if I haven't had enough travel with work, Jantina and I are planning a trip to D.C. this summer and also to Hawaii next year. D.C. Hotel is all on points, and both the flight and hotel for Hawaii are all points :) so business travel does have at least that bright side.

Mega whatthewhosits

Posted by Matt @ 11:45 PM

I have actually been at home, not on a plane for about 1 month now. I think it is a record. I'm still on my way to become super platnium or some crap. I better get some free stuff for this.

I have had the wireless network in the house for some time for the work laptop, but in a mad frenzy and a great sale at Best Buy, I purchased a card for the desktop. I can finally arrange my office without the constraint of a phone line for the DSL. By the way I am too cheap for cable. It is really nice. After about an hour of patching into the phone line and re-wiring my basement I was hooked up. The card is actually faster than the standard 10/100 card from Dell. I also upgraded the RAM and am finally happy with the PC. It was still cheaper than anywhere else. As we know I'm cheap.

Another batch of beer is in the works. This is a wheat beer and should be ready in a few weeks. I promised a co-worker that if she finally had her housewarming party that I would provide some gallonage of beer, so this is it. It better be good or I'm buying a keg.

I'm sorry I missed Ryan's wedding. It would only have been a 12 hour drive or something. it is harsh being stuck here sometimes. Even though you have job you like in a city you love, nothing beats being able to see the people you care about on a regular basis, or any basis.

Shine on you crazy diamonds. I need to crash, but too much in the old cabeza.

Picked up a decent sized memory card for the camera this weekend. Just so you know, 16MB doesn't hold much unless you're shooting sub-1-megapixel photos. Our new 128MB card should last a lot better. Of course, now I'll probably fill up my hard drives a lot faster.

LCHS song

"Lincoln, Lincoln, we are proud of you. Lincoln, Lincoln, we will e'er be true. Following the bright Golden Rule, we get things done without much ado. We're happy, we're snappy when we send our call. Lend your voices one and all. If dear old Abe were here I know just what he'd do; He'd say Lincoln, we're proud of you!"
