Aye, robot

Posted by guido @ 10:59 PM

Picked up the OTC X-Wing Pilot Luke Skywalker, OTC Greedo and Galactic Heroes Obi-Wan/Darth Vader two-pack tonight.

We were hoping to see the "Alien Vs. Predator" and "I, Robot" double feature at the drive-in, but the summer hours no longer seem to be in effect. We rented some stuff and watched "Scary Movie." A few chuckles, but kinda blah.

I listened to the self-titled CD by The Shore a few times during the weekend's road trip and am getting into it. Best Brit-Pop from a California band, some review said. I've also been liking the Juliana Hatfield's "In Exile Deo" and the Morrissey's "You Are The Quarry" now that I've had a few more listens.

Cooler recap

Posted by guido @ 2:24 PM

I did go to the COOLER CLASSIC 16 ultimate tournament over the weekend, about 6 hours away, just outside Milwaukee. The odometer reads about 744 miles for the whole trip.

I drove to Lincoln late Friday, got three hours of sleep then took off for Peoria at 3 a.m. Saturday, picked up Mike -- a Cat engineer -- in Peoria and we followed Kevin's car all the way to Delafield, WI, where we pulled into the polo fields at 8:30 a.m. First games started at 9 a.m.

I picked up with Rawhide -- formerly Smokelahoma -- from Tulsa, OK, with: [top row, l-r] Keith, Doug, Eric, Tom, Jimmy, Drew, Rafael (Geneva, Sweden), [bottom row] Mike, me, John (Fayetteville, AR), Leif (Springfield, MO), and Terryl. Oh, and you can see one of the team's cheese cow awards down in front of my knee, missing it's head.

I probably shouldn't play Open A again, and I pretty much knew that beforehand, but I'm glad I got to try it. I got my hands on the disc a few times, but the best play was my layout for a tipped/blocked disc a few feet from our endzone which we then scored on. We got 13th place in the Open A division. The championship game in our division was Big Ass Truck (Berkley, MI) vs. Machine (Chicago).

It was cool and windy and rained most of Saturday. It stopped for a while in the afternoon and started back up. It wasn't too bad. I probably could have used some sort of rain/windbreaker jacket, but I was OK.

At the end of the first day of play, Mike found me and we headed down to the campsite. We couldn't find the Peoria team, so we took a shower and then found the Peoria peeps back at camp after that. They already ate, so Mike and I went to get a chicken, breakfast bacon, Canadian bacon, pineapple pizza with a coupon that was in the tournament booklet thingy.

Mike had never heard of cheese curds, and although we were in Winconsin, I failed to procure some for him to try. I actually had some at Saturday night's party, but they disappeared pretty quick. And what are "hot reds," by the way?

Camped out in Ben's tent. There was a "per tent" fee, so it was better to share. Several people were playing poker until the wee hours in said tent. I got in on the no-money side game for a while and played a variety of games most of which were too confusing. Crazy Pineapple was fun. It continued raining until about 10 p.m., which damped the party a bit, but the tent held up pretty well. After it stopped raining, I ventured down to the party for a little while. Ran into some of the Rawhide guys. Threw the light-up disc around a bit. Had a beer and some snacks.

Probably went to sleep around 1 a.m. then I kept waking up too early Sunday morning, but I finally got up around 7:30 a.m. and packed up my gear, brushed teeth, etc. Mike and I grabbed something at McDonald's and got to the fields at 8:30 a.m. again.

After two games on Sunday, we watched the remainder of the championship game I mentioned earlier. Then Mike and I hit the road right away. It might have been around 4 p.m. I dropped off Mike at his house near Peoria and stopped at Emo's in Peoria Heights (that's what the clown picture to the right is from) for a quick dinner -- tamale hit the spot -- on the way to Lincoln. Then Julie and I and the dogs came back home Monday.

Condition report: I pulled my achilles tendon a tiny bit on Saturday. I got a sunburn on Sunday that was looking pretty bad as of Sunday night but looking better Monday. Poison ivy is doing much better.

I don't think I spent too much money: $23 Gas, $10 T-shirt, $8 disc, $6 snacks, $20 for meals, $18 for tournament fee, $2 for tolls = $87.

P.S.: Interstate 43 stinks.

Stranger with candy

Posted by guido @ 10:23 AM

Nice piece on Stephen Colbert over at THE NEW YORK TIMES (reg. required).
He does, however, have one earnest (Republican) convention agenda, provided he wangles sufficient access: "We want to find out actual information about Republicans. We want to know where the pods are, where they're grown, and we want to photograph them before they're harvested." Just kidding.

And Video game women take it off for Playboy in October issue: GAME OVER column.

Pork chop and cheesecake

Posted by guido @ 11:50 AM

Oh, the lawn is mowed and I am covered in sweat. It's getting warmer.

The night before Erin left, we had cheese cake ... and by we, I mean Utini reached way up on the counter and snarfed down a half a piece. Then last night he decided to take half of a pork chop. He even lifted the paper towel, that was on top, out of the way then put it back. Booger!

On the night shift

Posted by guido @ 10:19 AM

Picked up some trim paint for the kitchen and picked out a blue color for the upstairs bathroom. Julie's taking down the wallpaper right now (see pic, right). We have to get the ceiling and wall, under where the roof leaked, fixed up before we paint. Wouldn't it be nice not to have that big pipe there?

Found some new SW figures last night, too. I splurged on one of those freaking $30 12-inch figures -- Stormtrooper. Hopefully they'll get marked down sometime soon and I can buy one of those instead. Got four 3.75-inch "The Original Trilogy Collection" figures (Bossk, IG-88, Bespin Luke, R2-D2) and an unleashed Leia, too. I got the OTC ROTJ Luke last week.

The lawn is wet from yesterday's all-day storm, but I'm thinking I should try to mow anyway while I have the time. Might stop by Revolution Records. The disc I ordered should be in by now. I'm working the night shift tonight, which is a little unusual. Hope it goes better than my last one.

Just got an e-mail from Erin that her flights back to Vietnam all went well. She thinks they found an apartment in Hanoi and is jumping right into work tomorrow. And she says their new town is going to take some getting used to.
Mel and I are definitely southern girls at heart, so gettin' used to all this northern stuff will take some time. For example, stinking high prices and NONE of my favorite dishes! What up, G?

Excuses

Posted by guido @ 9:58 PM

A friend calls a carpenter today to offer him some work on his new house. Carpenter responds, "I'd like to, but I cut my hand off." Awkward silence...

This is Tim. He playes Ultimate until his nipples bleed. J.D. wrote a haiku about it, but I don't have a copy of that.

Slow motion for me

Posted by guido @ 9:03 PM

One of my favourite things about the olympics is watching the slow-motion replays. There aren't enough of them. Watching the runners' faces bounce oddly and seeing their muscles ripple and flex is a mix of surreal and beautiful. I also like the under-water cameras during the diving and swimming events.

International gate

Posted by guido @ 7:01 PM

Just got back home after taking Erin to O'Hare in Chicago. Her super-long flight back to Vietnam took off at 1 p.m. CST and she'll get to Hanoi around 10 p.m. (local time) on the 24th.

We stopped by Ikea after the airport and picked up a few things: ottoman, magnetic knife rack, a matching trash can and toilet seat for the upstairs bathroom that Julie is planning on redoing a bit. Julie's already got the ottoman put together.

Mom drove all the way to the airport while the rest of us slept, I drove from the airport to Ikea and back to Lincoln while Mom and Julie slept and Julie drove from Lincoln to home.

I picked up a tent, sleeping bag, air matress and stuff for next weekend. I'm planning to go to COOLER CLASSIC tournament near Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I don't have a team to play with yet, but I'm hoping.

I'm gonna try to get into the doctor tomorrow. Poison Ivy's trying to make a comeback now that my pills have run out. Burgaflickle!

Thrice the discs

Posted by guido @ 8:05 AM

The three discs I found (below) while searching for my lost disc at the disc golf course. This is the search that allowed me to experience the joys of poison ivy. It still seems to be popping up, too. I know I just said it seemed to be going away the other day, but as the worst spots get better, other areas show up.

CHEETAH
PROSTYLE K-2
ELITE ZXS

I tried to get ahold of the guy last night in Springfield while I was over there -- the guy who found the disc I lost originally -- but he didn't answer the phone. I did pick up comics and throw around with Mark and Cory, who were the only ones to show for Ultimate, and bought some hummus. Skipper and Dale of Virden met me at Ultimate and picked up the kitchen knobs and switchplate we offered up to the freecycle group. I don't think I've written about the JACKSONVILLE FREECYCLE GROUP yet and I'm not sure how well-known the movement is. You can find out about it at FREECYCLE.ORG if you don't know what it's about.

Olympic proportions

Posted by guido @ 11:14 AM

You can tell it's summer Olympics time because the AP Wire currently has:
114 photos of fencing
37 photos of handball (why haven't I heard of this game before this week?)
54 photos of table tennis
104 photos of judo
52 photos of sailing
175 photos of volleyball (beach and indoor)

Actually, I'm getting a total of 2401 Olympics photos. Yeesh.

Drowning in data?

Posted by guido @ 11:47 PM

We hit the library Monday afternoon and then headed over to Larry Calhoun's. We chatted and took pics of six of his newer paintings that he wanted put on his site.

He also had some sort of issue trying to update his version of Netscape. His profile was messed up, so I unscrambled that and got that working. Looked like he was trying to get an OSX version of Netscape, too, which was never going to work out as he is runnin' OS 8.6. :)

After we came home, I hunkered down and imported, cropped, toned, sized, etc. until I had the six new images up. I also decided to rearrange the paintings that were already there in an attempt to make the organization make more sense. Not sure if that really worked. Took me all night. Not sure how to speed this sort of thing up. Maybe if I did it all the time. I just don't have any effeciency when it comes to html and dealing with all those image files and links. Gak. Feels like I'm drowning in the concept of the computer file.

Well, here it is: VILLAGE ARTS

We watched "Bubba Ho-Tep" recently. It wasn't exactly what I was expecting. I was hoping I was pleasantly surprised.

IPPA Student Best of Photojournalism contest winning images were recently posted HERE.

I got to talk a little with my design mentor from the early days, Mike, on Saturday. He let me in on some of his thoughts about InDesign. Good to know that the newest version has a measurements palete and the others don't; InDesign has paletes instead of menus, which is annoying and slower; and his personal pet peeve is that it makes the use of soft drop shadows too easy.

'That's my boy!'

Posted by guido @ 10:05 AM

Fun with Bible translations! This is from an AP story I ran across about bad Bible translations.

Mark 1:10-11, Revised Standard Version:
After Jesus was baptized he saw “the Spirit descending upon him like a dove; and a voice came from heaven, ‘Thou art my beloved Son; with thee I am well pleased.”’

Compare that with this new translation:
"A pigeon flew down and perched on him. Jesus took this as a sign that God's Spirit was with him. A voice from overhead was heard saying, 'That's my boy!"'

There are many such passages in "Good as New: A Radical Retelling of the Scriptures," an exceedingly loose New Testament paraphrase by Britain's John Henson, a fundamentalist-hating Baptist. There's fundamentalist-hating and then there's just plain kooky, eh?

Rex Kwon Do

Posted by Troy @ 5:35 PM

We saw "Napoleon Dynamite" tonight. The best parts are on the Web site, but it was still a good time :)

Church service was quick today, they coordinated people who need help and those that were available to help. We went and grabbed some supplies for Red Cross.

Lots of trees down, not enough gasoline for some reason, but there are more traffic lights working than before.

One of the professors I had and liked keeps putting out these fun books. Here's a list of them:

LIST OF ALLAN METCALF BOOKS AT AMAZON

Looks like Julie won't be starting the school year off in the new building. They've pushed back the completion date so they have to spend the first half of the year (possibly) in the old high school. Bummer.

Jeepers Creepers

Posted by guido @ 12:15 PM

My swollen peepers as seen on Thursday afternoon. I'm currently singing a really bad version of "Betty Davis Eyes" with my own "Poison Ivy Eyes" lyrics, by the way. Click image for bigger, grosser image.

I keep getting more rash popping up ... I wonder if the poison ivy oils are still on my steering wheel or somewhere else and I keep getting more on me! The car's gonna get a wipe-down ASAP. This could drive me insane, I tells ya.

I did get to see Larry R. the last couple days. Julie and I went to look at one apartment with him Thursday night and it turned out to be one that Julie and I looked at years ago, when we were looking for our first apartment. That's a tiny bit odd.

Larry did finally find something he liked and it is pretty close to work and our house. It looks cool from the outside. That's all I saw of it so far. His recounted experiences kill me. He should probably have a blog (although he may and just not be telling me). He likened one of the apartments -- bland, sterile, office-like -- to the woman who showed it to him. Terrible, but funny.

On a side-note, Larry joked that he was going to read the entire year of Fuzzy Couch.

Fine 'Line'

Posted by guido @ 7:36 AM

Apparently, Toby McDaniel's column in the SJ-R on Wednesday poked fun at one of the Journal-Courier's "Open Line" comments:
YUM! The Jacksonville Journal-Courier's daily "Open Line" carries readers' comments on "any important local, national or international issue."

One such:
"I love peanut butter and banana sandwiches."

An editor's note followed:
"Nice to hear from you, Elvis."

"Open Line" is the reader call-in column that runs each day, by the way. The comments don't often get editor's notes, but when they are that far out in left field, they're kinda begging for it.

MURPHY LEE is reportedly playing a show tonight in Springfield at Club 217 for $40 at the door? Weird if true.

I'm in (W.Y.W.O.) shock

Posted by Troy @ 3:10 PM

So, Sunday night, I came home from Illinois. My wife told me on the phone, that when she picked me up from the airport, we were going to stop by the new apartment to see all that she had done. I knew that she had been working hard during the week, with lots of our friends, to get it painted prior to having the movers bring all of the boxes and furniture from the old place.

Well, when I get to the stop of the stairs, a bunch of our friends were there and they yelled "Surprise!" ... and I was. After a few seconds, I realized that not only was paint up, but all of the furniture had been moved in, and most of the boxes unpacked! More than a week ahead of schedule!! They must have worked themselves nearly to death while I was away. I was shocked...I'm still in shock.

Well, then we took a tour of the new place, if you've seen the TLC show "While you were out", it felt very much like that. I had an idea of the colors for paint, but everything else (my wife and friends had picked out) was new to me.

So wow. I'm moved in. I can't believe it. I'm so grateful!

Charley, Sorry

Posted by Troy @ 1:20 PM

Hurricane Charley is heading our way tomorrow. We are buying extra supplies and we also decided to have HomeTeam at our place on Friday to wait out the storm together. I guess its going to be pretty bad.

Update by Guido 4:16 p.m. CST Friday:
(AP) -- A stronger-than-expected Hurricane Charley roared ashore Friday as a dangerous Category 4 storm, pounding the heavily populated Gulf Coast with 145 mph wind and towering surges of water.

Update by Troy 11:16 p.m. EST:

The little black circle where the arrow is pointing is about where we are. We survived. Lucky for us, our place is situated so that the winds were blowing across the windows rather than against them.

Updated by Troy 1:21 p.m. Saturday:
Wow, 80% of Orlando is without power. We are in the fortunate 20%. Lots of trees down blocking roads, majority of traffic lights are out, its nearly impossible to get anywhere. The gas stations (the 20% that are able to run their pumps) have lines wrapping around blocks. Pretty bad damage last night.

'Roids!

Posted by guido @ 12:25 PM

Doctor gave me prednisone (a corticosteroid, is similar to a natural hormone produced by your adrenal glands) for the poison ivy. I should notice a difference by tomorrow. I was on this stuff about seven years ago when I broke out. Not sure what I touched then, but I know I wasn't digging in the woods back then. Worm brought me Ivy Super Dry, which he swears by, too. I'm trying it out now.

Ground Loop Isolator

Posted by Troy @ 11:04 AM

I bought a ground loop isolator from Radio Shack last night!! I had this annoying low electronic hum / buzz coming from my speakers when connecting my laptop to the stereo. A little RESEARCH and it turns out a $16 ground loop isolator from Radio Shack is all I needed. The hum is gone and sounds great now!

$10 figures?

Posted by guido @ 9:48 PM

I'm really itchy. Gonna call the doctor in the morning. -- Drinkin' peach tea. We hit Panera Bread for dinner before gettin' groceries tonight. Seafood bisque and a sammich.

Saw some of the new Star Wars figures tonight that are selling for $10 each (EXAMPLES) ... I can't do $10 for a regular 5-inch action figure. They are cool, card backs are all vintage looking and they come in a plastic shell. I just don't think I can do it, though. I hope they go on sale or something. Geez. The 12-inch figures are $30. It's just not right, I tell ya.

My friend Larry's coming down to J'ville tomorrow to look at apartments. Hopefully I'll see him a bit. I kinda already called Ultimate off because it sounded like people were going to be busy and my damn rash.

Word up/Eye shut

Posted by guido @ 7:56 AM

Yeah, I got poison ivy all over the place, including my eyelid. It's starting to swell shut. I'm excited about that. Since it's on my face, perhaps I won't try to suffer through it without going to the doctor.

Here's some new words being added to the Merriam-Webster Collegiate dictionary, though some are pretty old:
01. body wrap (noun)
02. clafouti (noun) dessert
03. digital subscriber line (noun)
04. dream catcher (noun)
05. information technology (noun)
06. lossless (adjective)
07. MPEG (noun)
08. MP3 (noun)
09. pleather (noun)
10. teensploitation (noun)
11. extension (noun) : a series of characters following a dot at the end of the name of a computer file

... and strangely enough, we just had a recipe for clafouti in the paper today.

Poison

Posted by guido @ 3:18 PM

Pretty sure I got poison ivy, either from digging around in the woods for my disc golf disc on Sunday or from mountain biking yesterday. Here's hoping I didn't wipe the stuff in my eyes (or some other sensitive area).

Mountain biking at Site M aka Jim Edgar State Park aka Panther Creek State Park -- whatever it's supposed to be called -- was fun. Clay and I took a 4-mile trail and a 5-mile trail. My bum hurts pretty good. New seat might be in order if/when I go again. Oh, and my brakes and gears need some tweaking.

Woke up rather nauseous this morning, so took a half-day off to rest. Starting to feel better.

If found, call Guido

Posted by guido @ 10:40 PM

I got stood up at Ultimate today. Not sure what happened there. Two little kids from Rockford came and were disappointed that nobody else came.

I stopped by Mark Dannenhower's to see if he wanted to join me for disc golf. He wasn't home. I went anyway. I lost my driver on the first hole. I searched the woods for about an hour and never found it. I did find three other discs, thought. One was a lot nicer than the one I lost. I'm hoping if someone finds it, they'll call me as my name and phone number are written on it.

Saw "The Triplets of Belleville" last night and "Outfoxed" tonight. Hung out at the Warmowskis' with a bunch of people and ate pizza. Pretty fun stuff. Some made s'mores.

Illinois Project

Posted by Troy @ 9:53 AM

I'm in Illinois doing some work for a previous employer. Kind of surreal going back there and seeing many of the same faces as 4 years ago. It has been good to catch up with family in the evenings though. (I'm staying in Lincoln since its close enough to commute)

My wife informs me that painting at the new place went well last night (we are moving to a new apartment). She did run out of paint in the living-room, she plans on finishing tonight though!

That's about it right now, getting back to work....

Pantagraph flap

Posted by guido @ 7:39 AM

Here's a couple stories about The (Bloomington, IL) Pantagraph showing up in Michael Moore's movie, "Fahrenheit 9/11." The newspaper says that the use of the headline over a letter to the editor, which appears briefly in the movie, is misleading. That, and the date is wrong for some reason.

Friday, July 23, 2004: Moore's flick: bowling for movie edits
Friday, July 30, 2004: Pantagraph to Moore: Headline use 'misleading'

I'm interested to see if Moore responds. If he does, I'd imagine he'd say the date was a mistake and not say anything about using the headline from the letter to the editor.

Dennis came over Saturday (actually Sunday morning) after work and watched "The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury" with me. It wasn't so good. I showed him a little of the Ultimate playoffs DVD and talked about possible stratagies. Sunday I went to Ultimate and the comic book store then Lincoln.

The Tropics has new owners, so we tried that out. Some of it was good, some was terrible. Service was pretty good, though not terribly professional. He was trying hard though. The menu was pretty large. My sandwich wasn't what I expected, but it was good, as were the fries; Soup was OK. The corn was from a can; the salads were just iceburg, pretty much; Dad's liver and onions were good; Julie's sandwich looked good; Erin took an extreme chance on one of the specials, Tempura Chicken, and lost.

Monday, we went down to St. Louis to hang out with Josh, Amanda, John and Kate. John and Kate are moving to Paris pretty soon, so we wanted to see them before they left.

A tad of "Rogue Squadron III." A round of Cranium before John and Kate had to take off. Greek food was awesome. Lamb shish kabob (yum), baklava (yum), a Missouri red wine (yum) whose name I can't remember. But boy, did it all hit me like a brick. Made for a long drive to Lincoln to pick up the dogs.

I had to take two naps, partially 'cause I was feeling bad. Probably sinus-pressure headache. Took the second nap in Lincoln and then drove back to Jacksonville. I made it home around 3:15 a.m. this morning feeling a good deal better; And this morning, a lot better.

LCHS song

"Lincoln, Lincoln, we are proud of you. Lincoln, Lincoln, we will e'er be true. Following the bright Golden Rule, we get things done without much ado. We're happy, we're snappy when we send our call. Lend your voices one and all. If dear old Abe were here I know just what he'd do; He'd say Lincoln, we're proud of you!"
