Here comes old man winter
I actually had to wear a jacket today. This begins the decline of nice days. At least I don't have to fill my bathtub with water.
We have had two showings on the house. Things in the market are slow so I'm not holding my breath on something right away. Anyone want a house in St. Paul?
Tonight will be one exciting night of TV. Presidental Debates!! I think I'll need a beer filter to understand the truth in the statements.
Rocket away
I'm suddenly in a photo exhibit that's opening this weekend.
Photographs by the Jacksonville Journal-Courier’s Steve Warmowski and Clayton Stalter and Guido Strotheide are among those to be shown at MacMurray College.
The three took part in the “America 24/7” book project along with more than 1,000 professional and tens of thousands of amateur photographers. Last year’s best seller is being followed this year by the publication of books for each of the 50 states. The show will feature the photographers’ favorite photos from the week.
Mr. Warmowski was the coordinator for the project in Illinois and has eight pictures in the book.
An opening reception is scheduled at 5-7 p.m. Saturday at MacMurray’s Putnam Center for the Arts. The gallery also will be open homecoming weekend from 6-7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, as well as during the regular hours of 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursdays or by appointment.
Prints from the show will be sold, with proceeds going to Big Brothers/Big Sisters of West Central Illinois. The books will be available at the show as well.
Buy a 50s-STYLE DINER in J'ville. -- Actually, you have to move it somewhere if you buy it. It used to be the Rocket Diner and I enjoyed going there, but it didn't make it. Now it's on eBay. Two days left and no bids, though.
Went to a 5-band indie-rock show at the Coffee Club last night. I stayed longer than I would have liked, but it was fun. Finally got to hear one of the local bands I've been wanting to hear (Hope for Madison). Also playing were Super Famicom (missed that one), League (from New York), Faultlines (Iowa City), J.A.C.K. (Springfield).

House lookers
We met up with Josh and Amanda and Gavin for lunch at BJ's on Sunday. They looked at some houses in town and plan to look at more the weekend of IC's homecoming. We rounded out the day by washing the cars and mowing the lawn ... and, of course, Ultimate.

Cheapish rental property
The house that Julie and I had our first apartment in is UP FOR SALE. We rented the upstairs, and it was a great deal. We had two washers and dryers that we were free to use and a garage and off-street parking, central air, a huge kitchen. The only reason we moved was because the owners wanted to sell it and move away.

I broke down and bought the newly-released STAR WARS TRILOGY DVD just now. I had to sign up for the Amazon credit card, but I got the DVD set for a "Grand Total: $11.80" which I thought was pretty good for an item with a $69.98 list price.
I added "Hidalgo" to my 2004 movie list. Julie and I both went to the video store, independently of each other, yesterday. I rented "Six Feet Under" season 2, disc 4 and "Hidalgo." Julie came in later and went to get the "Six Feet Under" disc only to find it gone. So she picked up a copy of "Hidalgo." The guy who had just checked me out a little while earlier -- Theo -- was probably a little confused. He told Julie I had just rented the same movie. So Theo saved us from renting two copies of "Hidalgo." Thanks, Theo! Now if I can just remember where I recognize Theo from.

Next up: Jeanne
Hurricane Ivan was redirected, but it looks like Jeanne is heading straight for us! Currently a category 3 hurricane, expected to be in Orlando around 8 a.m. Sunday.
So again, we are filling bathtubs and water jugs, topping off the car with gas, etc. We were certainly blessed to have been protected from the last two storms (CHARLEY & FRANCES). Will we be spared from a third? Stay tuned...
Update Sunday 09/26 9:00 a.m.
Well we survived the very blustery night! We still have power and all of our windows, internet, cable, and telephone service are all A-OK. We had a hurricane party last night with our friends over to ride out the storm. We played games (Scene It, Halo, Battlefront), watched movies (Lizzie McGuire, Lion King 1 1/2), and ate a lot (stir fry, peanut butter bars, vanilla/white chocolate cake). We had a blast. We were all up to 2 a.m. staying safe. We should have slumber parties more often!
Everyone else is still in bed. I'm ready for breakfast! It is still really blowing outside, but not as bad as in the middle of the night, so I'm sure the worst of it is over.
Update Monday 9/27 9:45 a.m.
The curfew was extended until 6 a.m. this morning, so we had guests for another night. We decided on a marathon viewing of the original Star Wars trilogy! (Christopher hadn't seen it before, so that was exciting!) The airport was closed, so my flight was canceled. I won't fly out until tomorrow morning now, and I just finished adjusting my hotel reservations. Weather looks nice out this morning: sun is shining, birds are singing :)

No protection needed
The U.S. House voted 247-173 yesterday to approve the so-called "Pledge Protection Act." The measure, H.R. 2028, bans all federal courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court, from considering constitutional challenges to the Pledge.
THE BILL
'No court created by Act of Congress shall have any jurisdiction, and the Supreme Court shall have no appellate jurisdiction, to hear or decide any question pertaining to the interpretation of, or the validity under the Constitution of, the Pledge of Allegiance, as defined in section 4 of title 4, or its recitation.'. The limitation in this section shall not apply to the Superior Court of the District of Columbia or the District of Columbia Court of Appeals.
Lame, I say.

OK, I'm testing Troy's new router setup by uploading this picture:
This is the dresser I helped a friend move to his upstairs bedroom the other day on my lunch break. Then we went to get a chicken salad sandwich at the Jacksonville Coffee Club. They were out of chicken salad, but made more just for us. Woo!

Might be going to a Guided by Voices concert in St. Louis tonight. Kinda last minute.Tuesday, September 21, 2004
Looking forward to the weekend
I'm in Philadelphia on a painfully-boring project.
I've been playing "BURNOUT 3" the last couple of weekends. It is a great racing game whose differentiator is incenting the player to crash! For example, in my favorite mode, the game provides busy intersections as game levels. The more dollars worth of damage you do by crashing through the intersection, the more points you get! There are other racing modes as well, all of them still encourage some level of crashing because you get speed bonuses for ramming competitors off the road.
The new game for this weekend, though, (my wife is picking up for me AS I TYPE) is the new "STAR WARS: BATTLEFRONT" game. An XBOX demo of SW:BF ships with the new DVDs, but I already know I'll like it. I'm looking forward to participating in massive Star Wars-themed battles, in vehicles or on foot, with 16 players online!
EDITOR'S NOTE: Nice use of "differentiator" and "incenting," though incenting sounds made up. :) -- g
Back to the Octopus store
So I'm back in Korea and voting for something squirmy tonight. Maybe I can top the last experience and get a photo.
I bought a new house, though it won't be official 'till we sell ours and all that. Anyone looking for a place in St. Paul?
Nothing much happening here other than the house, and that always seems to be something. Here's a photo of the new place. It is nice, but needs a ton of work.

Apparently a sad sac
Called off today's mountain biking excursion, so I got to have lunch at The Uncommons with Josh. I guess Clay saw me looking extra wiped out at the grocery store last night and thought I wouldn't want to go biking today. Hehe.
Well, I'm gonna run some errands and stop back over at IC this afternoon.
Those obscenely-priced figures were on sale at the store we got groceries at last night, so I picked up a few. Now I just have to return that Stormtrooper that I paid $30 for.Sunday, September 19, 2004
Playing catchup ... ummm, ketchup
Here's some stuff from the last few days all at once:
Saturday, Sept. 18 -- [5:26 p.m.]
Ultimate mini-tournament was a little bigger than I expected because Knox College and Bradley each had two teams, plus ISU, Peoria club team and possibly Wesleyan were there ... seven teams, anyway. Pretty cool.
Lucas and I left at 7 a.m., got to the fields in Peoria at 8:45 a.m., played two games, left at 12:30 p.m., got some sandwiches, hit the road and got back to J'ville around 3 p.m. Now I have to work 'till 2 a.m.

So I went back to Muggsy's again today. Larry wanted to go. He liked it and is threatening to get a standing, daily reservation. That would be pretty cool. Outside was full. Corned beef, cabbage and red potatoes were all good except for one really fatty piece of corned beef. It's half way to St. Pat's Day, you know.
Did someone want to go to the Ultimate mini-tournament with me and Lucas tomorrow? We're leaving at 7 a.m. but we both have to be back for work at 4 p.m. If you want to go, call me. 243-0092 or 245-6121.

P.J. hadn't heard of Muggsy's before, so we went there for lunch Thursday. One of the top few restaurants in J'ville (which really isn't saying too much). The weather was kick-@$$, so we ate outside. And thanks for the music, man. I've been wanting to check some of this stuff out for a while now.
Went to Ultimate pickup in Springfield last night. We could have used a few more people. And Eric R. sprained his ankle really good. Darn.
Not only did Yellowcard play in Jacksonville a few years ago (which makes some sense because they were on the same label as Park) but P.J. tells me Fall Out Boy played at Illinois College about a year ago. I wish I'd hear about these things.

Wight can't be wrong
Cool artwork for a proposed Buffy the Vampire Slayer cartoon at ERIC WIGHT'S SITE. His other stuff's pretty sweet, too, including LOBSTER JOHNSON and animated Austin Powers artwork.
I guess the Exclusive HOLOGRAPHIC EMPEROR PALPATINE FIGURE is available to non-hyperspace members over at SHOP.STARWARS.COM now, but $11 plus shipping? Come on!
“THE QUESTION OF GOD,” two two-hour programs (airing on PBS next Wednesday and the following Wednesday) where the topic of God’s existence is dabated. The show is inspired by a book by psychiatrist Armand Nicholi, who has taught Harvard University courses that compare the lives and religious thought of this odd couple:
--> Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, arguably the most influential atheist of modern times.
--> C. S. Lewis, English literature scholar at Oxford and Cambridge universities, a hard-bitten atheist who then embraced Christianity and became arguably the era’s most influential defender of belief.

Looks like Bryant has an article in DOT NET DEVELOPERS JOURNAL. I just saw it, even though it is dated Dec. 2003.Monday, September 13, 2004
Saddle sore
Left for mountain biking at 2:45 p.m. and just got back at 6:30 p.m. Whew. We were going to do a 14-mile trail, but I was feeling it, so we cut out and took the road back to the car. It was longer, but flatter.
So we ended up doing eight miles of trails plus a good chunk of road back to the car. I topped out the bike for a little while. If I had higher gears I could have gone faster. That was kind of an odd feeling.
I found an old post from July that I never published ... so now it's THERE. Almost all the CDs I had at that point in time.Sunday, September 12, 2004
Last name you woudn't want
Unfortunate surname seen in the credits of the Star Wars documentary tonight: Robert Clotworthy. Sorry, man.
I almost forgot to mention that I uploaded a couple pages to my PORTFOLIO at NewsPageDesigner.com recently.'The Plan'
That Star Wars documentary starts pretty soon. Gotta finish up this Six Feet Under episode.
I've had a MAJOR headache, plus nausea and clamminess, all day. I tried showering, getting up and around, eating, then laying down. Nothing seems to work. Had to not go to ultimate. Dang it.

Feeling porky
Stopped by Revolution Records and picked up the APPLES IN STEREO "Velocity of Sound" CD I ordered. I went ahead and ordered another John Vanderslice album, because the last one I got was goood.
That was as Julie and I were on our way to Porky Days. I had a smashing good pork chop sandwich there from the Muggsy's tent and some pretty good caramel corn. As we were heading home, we popped into a little flea markety story and I came across a Star Wars glass (1977) and a Return of the Jedi glass (1983) for $2.

Then I had to mow the lawn and go to work. Crazy news day at work, for a Saturday. Might go mountain biking Monday with Clay.
I hit my 50th movie of the year last night with "Starsky & Hutch." Not a milestone kinda film, but it has become such. Trying to get caught up on "Fantastic Four" comics lately. I'm behind on everything ... grr.
Hey, Troy, did I meant to tell you that there's a good looking new series where they're bringing Hal Jordan back as Green Lantern. Thought you might be interested.Friday, September 10, 2004
Hrumphhistation
There are several stories around about the changes Lucas has made in the upcoming DVD release of Star Wars IV-VI. Like the one in the TIMES STAR.
The biggest rumor about the new "Star Wars" Trilogy DVD, arriving in stores Sept. 21, is true. Lucas has inserted an image of Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker into the finale of "Return of the Jedi." It replaces actor Sebastian Shaw's image from the original 1983 film in the scene where Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), following the defeat of the Empire, nods knowingly at a lineup of angelic Jedis, including Anakin, Yoda and Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Heard about all this from Chris over at TOSHI STATION, by the way. Above pic is probably his, too (illustration, not the real deal, I'm sure.)
SCIFI has a story about Lucas defending his changes, but it sounds like he's arguing that he has the right as an artist to make changes. Well ... uh ... I don't think anyone is really saying he doesn't have the right.
They have a short list of changes, too:
In Episode IV: A New Hope, the controversial confrontation in the cantina in Mos Eisley has been changed yet again. The villainous Greedo now fires shots at Han Solo (Harrison Ford) at the same time Solo fires back. In the original film, Solo fired first; in 1997, Lucas changed the scene to have Greedo fire first. Also in Episode IV, 1997's added computer-generated footage of Jabba the Hutt appears to have been improved, with more fluid motion. In Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, the hologram image of the Emperor has been altered to feature Ian McDiarmid, the actor who played the Emperor in Return of the Jedi and appears in all three prequel films. The scene's dialogue has also changed to clarify the progression of Luke Skywalker’s training as a Jedi, as well as to acknowledge the relationship between Luke and Vader. In the original release of Empire, the Emperor's image was played by an unbilled old woman wearing prosthetic makeup, with chimpanzee eyes superimposed in post-production into darkened eye sockets, the official Star Wars Web site reported. The original voice was provided by Clive Revill. In Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, Hayden Christensen's Anakin Skywalker is added as a ghostly image in the final scenes of the film, alongside Yoda and Alec Guinness' Obi-Wan Kenobi. But Sebastian Shaw remains as the face of Darth Vader/Anakin in the scene in which Luke removes Vader's helmet, and not Christensen, as had been rumored.
Here's some more changes that IGN is saying it found:
Episode IV: A New HopeThe 1997 animation added to the entrance to Mos Eisley is much smoother. Jabba has been retexturized and looks considerably better. Han still walks on his tail, but it's much smoother. The lettering on various Death Star panels are written in Aurebesh rather than English. The matte-painted hall in Leia's detention block looks much more realistic.
Episode V: The Empire Strikes BackTemuera Morrison does the voice of Boba Fett Luke's inane scream when he jumps to escape Vader on Cloud City is gone. And there was much rejoicing.
Episode VI: Return of the JediWhen Vader's helmet is removed, his eyebrows are gone and his eyes are recolored to match Hayden's. Perhaps this was in the 1997 special editions, but in the various background shots of the new Death Star, its appearance changes and you can see progress as the station takes shape.
Oh, there this TIME MAGAZINE ARTICLE about the DVD, too, which mentions some of the changes.

'Garden' variety
Just added "Garden State" to the MOVIE LIST. Julie and Larry and I went a little while ago. It was very nice. Watching episode 4 of "Six Feet Under" season 2.
Just added the SPELLBOUND extension for the Firefox browser at home and might do the same at work tomorrow if I think of it.
Larry started a kick-ass travel page for Saturday. Have a lunch get-together planned for Friday with Josh and Quahoon. Will I make it to the Lazer Tag get-together Friday night? I don't know. Tomorrow is the Upper-Story tour of downtown from 4-7 p.m. Wish I had time to go to that, but Ultimate calls.
Vacation Lock-in
I'm on vacation this week. We decided to stay home and relax which is a great vacation for me since I'm always traveling. I finished up a project in Michigan last week that went really well (fast), so I was able to get home on Wednesday before they closed the Orlando airport. They closed MCO because of approaching Hurricane Frances, as you know, we did survive that over the weekend ... but now Hurricane Ivan might be next (grrr).
We've been playing a lot of games and catching up on anime. "Grave of the Fireflies" was really good, very sad though. We got another disc in each of the series "Angelic Layer" and "Last Exile." Both are excellent. We also went to the theater with some friends and saw "Hero." I enjoyed it more than "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon."
As for video games, mostly playing the GAMES I got for my birthday (I had a bunch of pre-owned games on the list and ended up getting 11!). "Morrowind" has been a good time-consuming game for this week; several late nights with that one.
We did manage to get out of the house a little. We went to the theme parks for lunch with a friend, shopping for more anime, and retrieved more groceries. I managed to run a few mundane errands, too, but for the most part, we've just locked ourselves in the apartment like true HIKIKOMORI! Just kidding. We're simple otaku wannabes ^_^
"Empire of Dreams"
“Star Wars: Empire of Dreams” A look at how the young George Lucas had an idea for a film (an updated Flash Gordon, 1930-ish space opera) that few understood or supported, then, in a fight to the finish, how he got it made. The documentary, which airs at 7 p.m. CDT Sunday on A&E, puts “Star Wars” in historical context.

Frances craps up Florida again
News is reporting the worst of Hurricane Frances is past Orlando. Hope Troy and Jantina are doing well. What's the poop?
Wherefore are thou Ephant Mon?
Help! Can you fuzzycouch readers check your local KB Toys for this?
ELUSIVE EPHANT MON RETURNS, Rebelscum.com reports

... a ray of light for all the collectors that were left in the dark when the much anticipated Fan Choice Ephant Mon figure slipped away unexpectedly from shelves ... it is now showing up in large quantities at KB Toy stores all over the U.S. with the ridiculously low price of $2.99 each.
The Springfield KB Toys closed down recently, so I'm kinda stuck when stuff like this happens or when they have an exculsive figure. An Ephant Mon without packaging stresses and tears and such would be awfully swell.

Delivery of the 'Sith'
I suggested going to the Magic Kitchen after work to celebrate the hiring of Larry, Leslie's new job, possibly Labor Day, Julie first week back at school and ... OK, maybe that's all. The six of us (Bre, Copper, Larry, Leslie, me, Julie and Maria) waited maybe more than an hour for a table, but it was gooood ... and hot.
There's Larry and Leslie at the Kitchen, not having any pie.
Painting with sand
Tibetan Buddhist monks from Drepung Loseling Monastery in India will be constructing a mandala sand painting at Illinois College next week -- and I should go.
The opening ceremony -- during which the lamas consecrate the site and call forth the forces of goodness through chanting, music and mantra recitation -- will be held 10 a.m. Monday in the chapel. The sand painting will then be constructed in the Kellogg Atrium of Parker Science Center from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday and Tuesday; 1-8 p.m. Wednesday; and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursday. The closing ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Parker Science Center.

Again with the Hurricane : FRANCES
Hurricane Frances is heading our way this weekend. A lot of people were still recovering from Charley! There is a STORY at the Sentinel talking about the possibility people will be hit with another insurance deductible because it is another event. In the case of hurricane, the insurance deductible is very large.
Here we go again... this one is supposed to be worse than CHARLEY.

The faculty
From today's JJ-C, some news about my buddy and former college roomie:
Illinois College has announced the appointment of new faculty members for the 2004-05 academic year.
Joshua T. Cox, instructor in art, served as a sabbatical leave replacement at Illinois College during the 2004 spring semester. He earned a Bachelor of Science in art and art history from MacMurray College and a Master of Science in theory, criticism and history of art from Pratt Institute in New York.
Yeah, Josh!
