Blackened

Posted by guido @ 11:38 PM

Black Friday: Ethan and Emily were in photos made by the State Journal-Register. And Emily was quoted (see below) in one of the stories. And here are the photos in a multimedia slide show. I picked out Ethan in about the third photo.

4:21 a.m.

Board games are the time-waster du jour. About a third of the way down Best Buy's line, high school students Janel Filbeck, Emilie Lowe and Chris Powley, all of Lincoln, play something called Kensington.

The wait can be a bonding experience, it seems -- the girls felt comfortable enough to briefly leave their purses with some folks who were total strangers only hours before.

"This is the greatest experience I've ever had," Lowe says.

Wii

Posted by guido @ 11:45 PM

Josh and Amanda went out this morning and managed to find a Nintendo Wii (on the first day they were available). We got a call from them that they were setting it up and we should come over. So we did get the opportunity to play the new Wii. Josh, Amanda and Julie created my Mii for me while I was at Ultimate, and it looks good. I don't think I care for the baseball game, but the other Wii Sports games were fun.

UPDATE: See my Flickr account for photos of the Mii characters we created.

Speaking of Ultimate, Sunday's game was eventful. Not only did we have a ton of people out -- 16 or 17 including four or five new people -- but we had an injury. Carlos dislocated his finger as he was diving for the disc. He popped up and said "Can anyone fix this?" Turns out, we could have popped it back ourselves, but we weren't feeling too confident about doing that, so I grabbed my keys and drove him to St. John's Hospital.

Julie got to feeling pretty sick all of a sudden after we got home as we were watching "The Di Vinci Code."

Shot in the belly

Posted by guido @ 3:00 AM

A friend from high school was in the springfield paper last week because he got shot during an attempted robbery. [story here] He says he's OK now. He sent this note out Sunday afternoon:

"One crazy thing is it didn't hurt nearly as bad as you'd think. i was shocked. but then again it wasn't a large caliber weapon. I'm doing fine and just got home 1/2 hour ago."

SJR Photo.

And here is a photo (for those of strong constitution). [link]

UPDATE:
Fund to aid shooting victim
The 32-year-old shooting victim, whose name has been withheld, was released from St. John’s Hospital Sunday but friends say he will have to take several weeks off work. To help the man, his wife and their two sons -- ages 15 months and 4 years -- with holiday and medical expenses not covered by insurance, a special account, “The Shooting Victim Fund,” has been established at CEFCU credit union to take donations.

Another fellow student dead

And in other high-school-related news, Matt just told me that Tim Plut, 31, of Lincoln died Wednesday. I haven't heard what the circumstances were.

LCHS song

"Lincoln, Lincoln, we are proud of you. Lincoln, Lincoln, we will e'er be true. Following the bright Golden Rule, we get things done without much ado. We're happy, we're snappy when we send our call. Lend your voices one and all. If dear old Abe were here I know just what he'd do; He'd say Lincoln, we're proud of you!"
